The music community is plunged into mourning over the loss of one of its own. Brent Hinds, a founding member and former guitarist of the iconic heavy metal band Mastodon, passed away on August 20, as confirmed by the band. He was 51 years old. Tragically, Hinds' life was cut short in a motorcycle accident. On the fateful night of August 20, while riding his Harley Davidson in Atlanta, he collided with a BMW SUV, according to an August 21 statement by the Atlanta Police Department. The BMW driver "failed to yield while turning left" but stayed at the scene. The police have initiated an investigation, which is still ongoing.
Upon hearing the heart-wrenching news, the remaining members of Mastodon, who lost Hinds in March, expressed their profound sadness and grief. "We are absolutely devastated and shocked," the band wrote on Instagram on August 21. "We are still struggling to come to terms with the loss of this incredible creative force, with whom we shared countless victories, milestones, and the creation of music that has resonated deeply with so many hearts." They further added, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Brent's family, friends, and fans. During this incredibly difficult time, we kindly ask for respect for everyone's privacy."
Hinds' loved ones also took to Instagram on August 21 to mourn his untimely demise. "We are absolutely shattered to announce that our beloved Brent, while riding his motorcycle, was hit by a driver who failed to yield last night in Atlanta. He did not survive. Please give us time to grieve," they wrote.
Several of Brent's friends and contemporaries also paid homage to him, including actor Norman Reedus. "Man, come on. We just spoke! I loved this guy," Reedus shared on Instagram on August 21, alongside a photo of him with the late rocker. "He was one of a kind. I have numerous photos of us, and this is from the day we got matching Lemmy tattoos in New Orleans. This is the worst news today." Norman also issued a heartfelt plea to drivers, urging them to be cautious. "People driving cars, please, for the love of God, watch out for motorcycles! Please."
