Britney Spears is striking back at the explosive revelations in her ex-husband Kevin Federline's new memoir, in which he voices profound concern for the pop icon and expresses deep-seated fears for the well-being of their two sons. A representative for Spears, aged 43, issued a statement exclusively to PEOPLE ahead of the release of Federline's memoir, "You Thought You Knew." "With the news from Kevin's book surfacing, it's clear that once again, he and others are exploiting her for profit, and tragically, this comes after child support payments to Kevin have ceased," the statement declares. "All Britney cares about is her children, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and their welfare amidst this sensationalism. She has already shared her personal journey in her memoir, 'The Woman in Me.'"
Spears and Federline, 47, tied the knot in 2004 and were blessed with sons Sean Preston, now 20, and Jayden James, 19, before their divorce was finalized in 2007. In his new book, Federline recounts that his sons once approached him with troubling allegations about their pop star mother, expressing a reluctance to spend time at her residence during their teenage years. "They would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night to find her standing silently in the doorway, watching them sleep — 'Oh, you're awake?' — with a knife in her hand," Federline reportedly pens in his memoir, as cited by The New York Times. "Then she'd quietly turn around and leave without a word."
Elsewhere in the memoir, Federline expresses his apprehension about Spears' current state, which he perceives as hurtling towards an irreversible crisis. "It's become impossible to ignore the signs. From my vantage point, the clock is ticking, and we're nearing the 11th hour," he writes, as per the Times. "Something catastrophic is on the horizon if things don't change, and my greatest fear is that our sons will be left to pick up the pieces."
While Federline doesn't elaborate on his specific concerns about Spears, he does suggest that the "Free Britney" movement, which played a pivotal role in liberating the star from her 13-year conservatorship, may have had unintended negative consequences. "Now, more than ever, [our children] need your support. I've been their shield for years, but now the situation has escalated beyond me," he writes. "It's time to raise the alarm."
Federline's memoir is slated for release on October 21. Meanwhile, Spears released her own memoir, "The Woman in Me," in 2023. In her book, Spears reveals that Federline "ripped my world apart" during their custody battle: "He left me breathless. And my family offered no solace."
