Cameron Diaz, who gracefully returned to the silver screen this year after an almost decade-long sabbatical with the Netflix smash hit "Back in Action," is gearing up for yet another thrilling comeback. The actress has inked a deal with the streaming behemoth once more to headline "Bad Day," an action-packed comedy under the helm of Jake Szymanski, renowned for directing the acclaimed comedy series "Jury Duty" and the hit film "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates."
Beau Bauman, the producer behind "Back in Action," is reuniting with his Good One Productions to oversee this venture. Penned by Laura Solon, the original screenplay revolves around a resilient single mother's desperate struggle to fulfill a tiny promise to her daughter amidst the chaotic backdrop of the worst day of her life.
This project has been likened to a comedic reinterpretation of Joel Schumacher's 1993 dramatic film "Falling Down," which starred Michael Douglas as a man pushing past his breaking point to attend his daughter's birthday party. Solon, alongside Mark Moran, will serve as executive producers. This marks the third collaboration between Solon and Bauman, who have previously collaborated on the comedies "Office Christmas Party" and "Let It Snow." Solon penned the script on specification, with Bauman lending his expertise to its development.
Netflix is swiftly advancing with this production, scheduled to commence filming this autumn in New York and New Jersey. Throughout her illustrious career, spanning films like "Something About Mary," "The Holiday," "Bad Teacher," and the "Shrek" franchise, Diaz stood as one of Hollywood's most bankable big-screen stars until she took a break in 2014. She was enticed back by Netflix's previous regime with the allure of a lucrative paycheck and the opportunity to reunite with her "Annie" co-star Jamie Foxx in "Back in Action."
The film, which chronicles the adventures of a married couple who happen to be ex-spies, premiered in January and swiftly became a platform sensation. Within just six months, it has soared to the sixth spot on Netflix's all-time most-watched movies list, according to Nielsen. "Back in Action" also holds the title of the most-watched original streaming movie of the year thus far, amassing 5.26 billion minutes viewed, and ranks as the third-most-watched movie across any streaming platform.
Diaz is represented by LBI Entertainment and Jackoway Austen, while Szymanski is represented by UTA, Mosaic, and Sloane Offer. Solon is represented by Gersh, Independent Talent Group, and Jackoway Austen.
