Chappell Roan swiftly removed her tribute to Brigitte Bardot after learning of the provocative French actress's controversial political views. Upon hearing the news that Bardot had passed away at the age of 91, the Grammy winner initially shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram Story on Sunday, writing, "Rest in peace, Ms. Bardot. She was my inspiration for 'Red Wine Supernova.'" However, she later deleted the post and replaced it with a new one on Monday, expressing her dismay: "Holy shit, I did not know all that insane shit Mr. Bardot stood for. I do not condone this. Very disappointing to learn."

At the beginning of Roan's song "Red Wine Supernova," released in 2023, she references the French starlet in her lyrics: "She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot / She showed me things I didn't know." While Bardot was known for her roles in films like "And God Created Woman," "The Truth," and "Contempt," she ultimately retired from acting in 1973, at the age of 39, to focus on animal rights activism. However, she later adopted a decidedly extremist political stance as a far-right supporter, backing National Front candidates such as Catherine Megret and Marine Le Pen.
Bardot frequently spoke out against the "Islamisation" of France and condemned the influx of immigrants into the country, especially Muslims, as reported by the Associated Press. She was also criticized for inciting racial hatred and for comparing homosexuals and pedophiles in her book. In 2018, she further denounced the #MeToo movement, stating at the time, "I thought it was nice to be told that I was beautiful or that I had a nice little ass."
