Charli XCX wasn't meant to be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, but that didn't deter her from making a surprise splash on the late-night extravaganza this past Saturday. Role Model, who took center stage as the official musical guest for the second episode of Season 51, graced the SNL stage with a rendition of his track, “Sally, When The Wine Runs Out.” When performing this song live, Role Model often brings out a special guest, known to fans as the “Sally girl.”

In the past, Role Model has handpicked artists like Conan Gray and Troye Sivan—Charli XCX's close friend and co-headliner on the Sweat Tour—to step into the “Sally girl” role. The two have even engaged in playful banter on social media over some mock “Sally girl” drama, which included Role Model featuring the “Rush” singer during one of his shows. However, it seemed Charli XCX and Role Model had finally smoothed things over on the remix (or rather, the SNL stage), as she made a surprise cameo during his performance of the beloved track. Eager-eyed fans also noticed that the “360” singer sported the same shirt Role Model had worn in promotional shots released earlier that week for the episode, emblazoned with “max’s kansas city.”

The “Look At That Woman” singer made his SNL debut on Saturday night, sharing the spotlight with host Amy Poehler. The second episode of Season 51 turned out to be a star-studded affair, with former cast members Tina Fey and Seth Meyers also making unexpected appearances.

Charli XCX herself hosted SNL for the first time last year, doubling as both host and musical guest. The Grammy winner is renowned for spotlighting fans—and occasionally surprising celebrities—during special segments of her concerts. Set to her track “Apple,” Charli XCX regularly selects a concertgoer or public figure to be featured on the big screen at her shows, where they often perform the popular TikTok dance to the tune of her song.

Her SNL appearance comes amid swirling rumors of a supposed feud with Taylor Swift. The latter singer’s latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, features a track titled “Actually Romantic,” which some fans speculate is a response to Charli XCX’s 2024 hit “Sympathy is a Knife.”
