Chris Columbus Says ‘Harry Potter’ Reunion Is “Never Going to Happen” Due to J.K. Rowling’s Transphobia

Chris Columbus, the visionary helmsman behind the initial two installments of the beloved "Harry Potter" cinematic saga, has revealed that the notion of a reunion featuring the original magical ensemble remains but a distant, elusive fantasy, thwarted by the unwavering stance of series creator J.K. Rowling against transgender rights. Initially, Columbus harbored grand ambitions to once again enchant worldwide audiences by bringing the spellbinding cast to the silver screen, this time through an adaptation of the Broadway hit "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child." Yet, amidst what he perceived as an increasingly "intricate" and polarized environment, these hopes have withered and faded, leaving but a ghost of their former promise.

"It's never going to happen," Columbus lamented in a recent interview with The Times U.K., his voice tinged with regret. "The political undertows have ensnared everything, creating an impasse. Each cast member holds a unique perspective that diverges sharply from Rowling's, making such a reunion an impossibility."

In recent times, Rowling has come under intense scrutiny and condemnation for her transphobic views, which she has vehemently expressed on social media, denouncing the transgender rights movement. Earlier this year, she hailed a landmark ruling by the U.K. Supreme Court that transgender women should not be legally recognized as women, affirming that "sex" should legally correspond to one's biological sex.

Columbus, who steered the magical journeys of Harry Potter in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (2001) and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" (2002), has previously spoken out against the author's controversial viewpoints. Speaking further to The Times U.K., he admitted, "I haven't spoken to Miss Rowling in about a decade, so I'm in the dark about her current thinking and feelings."

As for the original trio – Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson – Columbus expressed his enduring bond, stating with warmth, "I maintain a close connection with Daniel Radcliffe, and we spoke just a few days ago. My relationship with all the young actors from the cast remains as warm and intact as ever."

Conversely, Rowling cannot echo such sentiments of camaraderie, having declared that she would not forgive those who advocate for transgender healthcare, including her own Harry Potter stars Grint, Watson, and Radcliffe. In response, the latter trio expressed profound sadness, noting that Rowling's remarks had genuinely shattered their hearts.
