Christina Ricci is now casting a nostalgic, yet critical, eye on her fashion choices from her younger years. During a recent episode of the 'Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend' podcast, Ricci and O'Brien engaged in a riveting discussion about their shared past in a trendy, historic New York City apartment building, which was also home to some iconic 90s celebrities. As the conversation flowed, Ricci made a humorous yet self-deprecating revelation.
"I remember seeing you, so cool," O'Brien reminisced, prompting an immediate rebuttal from Ricci. "I was not [cool]," she confessed, her voice tinged with amusement. "I was a complete mess. I was going through my Garbage Pail Kids phase."
For those unfamiliar with the term (or for those born after the 90s), the Garbage Pail Kids series of sticker trading cards, first introduced in 1985, featured disturbing parodies of the beloved Cabbage Patch Kids. Ricci elaborated, "I had decided that if I was destined to be perceived as ugly, I might as well embrace it by dressing as hideously as possible. So, I wore clashing colors, oversized pants, and even men's underwear. It was my whole aesthetic: Garbage Pail Kids embodied."
O'Brien was taken aback by Ricci's assessment of her former style, questioning, "Well, I don't understand why you had such a negative self-image."
The 'Yellowjackets' star had a simple, yet relatable explanation: "I was a teenager," she said, her tone matter-of-fact.
Elsewhere in the podcast, the duo delved into Ricci's recent Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. Melanie Lynskey, Sophie Thatcher, Tawny Cypress, and several other 'Yellowjackets' co-stars were present to celebrate the Hollywood veteran's achievement in March.
"I know I'm here, and my career has flourished because of the unwavering belief others have had in me, and the work and support they have willingly offered," Ricci expressed during the ceremony, her voice filled with gratitude.
The 'Casper' star even cracked a joke, saying, "I'm here now, and forevermore, I'll be etched in Hollywood Boulevard and Argyle Avenue. When I die, I'll haunt my star, so I'll always be here." Switching back to a serious tone, Ricci reiterated, "I'm only here because of the incredible people in my life who have walked this journey with me. I'm so grateful, honored, and deeply moved."
Currently, Ricci is showcasing her acting prowess as the quirky (and possibly psychopathic) adult version of Misty in 'Yellowjackets.' The season 3 finale will begin streaming on April 13 on Showtime.
