The visionary behind Crumbl Cookies, who co-founded the brand in 2017 alongside his cousin Jason McGowan in Logan, Utah, has publicly identified as gay, citing online speculation that he deemed potentially "harmful" as his catalyst for speaking out.
"Rather than allowing others to pen my narrative, I wish to recount it in my own voice," Sawyer penned on Instagram on August 25. "Over the recent years, I've come to comprehend and embrace my homosexuality." The 33-year-old continued, "It's taken me a lengthy journey to fully grasp this aspect of myself, and even more time to feel assured enough to voice it aloud."
Sawyer, whose journey with Crumbl began in the heart of Utah, shared that grappling with his sexuality was at times "overwhelming and daunting," yet ultimately brought him a tranquility, joy, and authenticity that he cherishes immensely. He also delved into his Mormon upbringing, acknowledging that while he holds dear the values and beliefs instilled in him, this personal journey was further complicated by them.
Recalling his roots in Southeastern Idaho and his missionary work in Mexico for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sawyer previously revealed these aspects of his life to Utah State Magazine, his alma mater. "I remain deeply appreciative of my foundational upbringing," he emphasized in his post, "even as I've endeavored to embrace this truth about myself."
