Cynthia Erivo has been handpicked to take on the leading voice role in "Bad Fairies," an animated feature film brought to life by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation. In a thrilling announcement made on Thursday, Warner Bros. also unveiled a May 21, 2027, release date for this highly anticipated project.
"Bad Fairies" is being expertly helmed by Megan Nicole Dong, a renowned animation writer and story artist who is the creative force behind the beloved Netflix series "Centaurworld." Sharing the directorial reins is Olivier Staphylas, whose impressive portfolio includes work on blockbuster films like "Puss in Boots" and "Wish Dragon."
The film's original screenplay is the brainchild of Deborah Frances-White, while the musical comedy is infused with original songs penned by the Tony Award-winning duo Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, known for their hit musical "Six: The Musical." Adding to the film's musical magic is Isabella “Machine” Summers, a multiple Grammy-nominated artist from Florence + The Machine, who is composing the score and contributing to the songs.
According to Warner Bros.' announcement on Thursday, this musical comedy follows the escapades of a "delightfully subversive gang of fairies as they turn their magical world upside down." Erivo will lend her voice to Jayne Staplegun, a trailblazing fairy whose rebellious spirit ignites a revolution.
The film's creative ensemble also boasts producer Carolyn Soper, editor Sim Evan-Jones, cinematographer James C.J. Williams, character designer Uwe Heidschötter, and heads of story Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt. Production is currently in full swing in London, with DNEG Animation serving as the digital partner.
"Bad Fairies" will mark the inaugural feature film released under the first-look deal between Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith. Erivo, a triple Academy Award nominee and an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award-winning actress, is set to grace the big screen once again, reprising her iconic role as Elphaba in "Wicked: For Good," which is scheduled for release on November 21.
