Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have reportedly called it quits, bringing an end to their almost eight-year, tumultuous romance, according to multiple sources who spoke to PEOPLE. "This time, it truly feels like the final curtain," shared one insider about their separation. Representatives for the celebrities declined to comment on the matter when approached by PEOPLE.
The 35-year-old actress of "The Materialists" and the 48-year-old Coldplay frontman, who first sparked dating rumors in 2017, were captured together just two weeks ago on a Malibu outing on May 16. Earlier, in January, they were photographed holding hands during Martin's tour in India.
In March 2024, an informed source revealed to PEOPLE that Johnson and Martin had secretly been engaged for "years" following initial engagement whispers in 2020, albeit they were "in no hurry to tie the knot" at that juncture.
When breakup rumors surfaced in August 2024, Johnson's representative swiftly denied them, asserting that the couple was "happily together." Around the same period, another source mentioned, "Granted, they've faced hurdles and taken breaks before, but things were fantastic then. Both are passionate about their careers and strive to maintain a balance."
Prior to that, in June 2024, a source noted that Johnson and Martin, who preferred to keep their relationship low-key, "had their ups and downs, but were definitely back on track."
Johnson has previously spoken fondly about being part of Martin's children's lives – Moses and Apple, now 19 and 21 respectively, from his marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow. "I cherish those kids as if my life depends on it," Johnson confessed to Bustle. "With all my heart."
She also revealed to the outlet her admiration for watching Martin perform: "I don't know what it is, but I adore watching him. I could watch him every single day. I can't quite explain it. It's like watching my beloved do what he loves most."
Johnson, who next stars alongside Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal in the romantic film "The Materialists," releasing in theaters on June 13, discussed relationships during an interview with the Los Angeles Times published on June 4, while promoting the film. "For too long, society has been quick to judge relationships and their 'proper' form, timing for marriage, and viewing divorce as negative. When you think about it, why should divorce be seen as bad? Why do people need to marry at a certain age or only once? It truly doesn't matter," she said.
