Superman, starring the talented David Corenswet and the luminous Rachel Brosnahan, is poised to make a monumental impact on the upcoming award season. The film has already established itself as the third-highest domestic grosser of 2025, following the likes of Lilo & Stitch and A Minecraft Movie. According to Variety, Warner Bros. Studio has submitted the film into the Drama category at the Golden Globe Awards, with James Gunn's intention to "elevate the iconic superhero beyond mere escapist entertainment."

The studio has nominated Superman for Best Motion Picture (Drama), along with Corenswet for Best Actor (Drama), Brosnahan for Supporting Actress, and Nicholas Hoult for Supporting Actor. Gunn himself has been included in the nominations for Directing and Screenplay, as well as for Original Song for The Mighty Crabboys Theme, penned by Gunn, Eric Nally, and Devin Williams. Additionally, the film's impressive box office receipts have secured its consideration for Outstanding Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, recognizing films that have grossed over $150 million globally.
"The drama category positioning underscores Gunn's ambition to present the Man of Steel, traditionally associated with truth, justice, and the American way, as a vehicle for weighty themes," writes the publication.
The Golden Globes buzz around Superman follows an earlier surge of Oscar hype earlier this month. The film has been submitted for a total of 16 nominations across various categories in Hollywood's biggest awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, and more.
Previously, Todd Phillips' DCU film Joker (2019) won Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score, with both victories translating to Oscar wins. Gunn has also been recognized for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which received a nomination for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement at the Globes before earning an Oscar nom for visual effects. Meanwhile, his original Guardians of the Galaxy won an Oscar for makeup and hairstyling and visual effects in 2014.
