Demi Lovato is no longer allowing social media to sway her perception of her own talent, having fundamentally transformed the way she responds to online criticism. The 33-year-old pop sensation, who has often been the subject of numerous social media memes poking fun at her music or videos, has now mastered the art of self-deprecation with a smile.
In a candid interview with PAPER magazine on Monday, September 15, the "Cool for the Summer" chart-topper opened up about her evolving perspective on encountering memes about herself. "What's been really enjoyable for me lately is that I've fully embraced TikTok. I used to just lurk around, occasionally checking it out, but I never really dedicated time to creating videos. Once I re-engaged online, the memes started flooding in," Lovato revealed.
The "Heart Attack" singer went on to elaborate, "A truly empowering and effective strategy to reclaim control is to embrace those memes. Because if I'm the one laughing, then no one else can laugh at me. I'm the one poking fun at myself."
Though she acknowledged that some controversies swirling around her are "so absurd," Lovato emphasized that her new "chapter is all about reclaiming my power," a sentiment that aligns with her forthcoming album, "It's Not That Deep." "It's about owning my music, owning my current journey, and owning the place I'm at in life right now—which is happy, lighthearted, and free-spirited," Lovato remarked.
