Former "Bachelor" star Sean Lowe has disclosed a harrowing ordeal involving his family's newest rescue dog, Moose, an incident that pushed him to the brink of survival. In a video posted on his Instagram on Monday, Lowe, alongside his wife, Catherine Giudici, opened up about Moose, whom they welcomed into their home in January, attacking him on multiple occasions.
"I've wrestled with whether to share this with you all, but considering the inevitable questions and perhaps glimpses you might come across, I thought it best to address it head-on," Lowe prefaced the video.
He recounted that on a Thursday, amidst a barbecue session with friends while his wife and children were out shopping, the smoke alarm blared. Armed with a dishcloth, he ventured inside to dispel any potential smoke seeping in from the grill.
"As I held the cloth, Moose approached, snapped at it, and aggressively nipped my finger—something wholly out of character. I gently reprimanded him, 'No, Moose,'" Lowe recounted.
However, Moose's behavior escalated, shifting his focus to Lowe's feet, biting with such force that he punctured holes through his shoes. Despite Lowe's repeated commands of "No," Moose persisted in his attack.
"It was precisely at this juncture when he bared his teeth and lunged at me, not in the fleeting, scared, or defensive bites typical of many dogs, but a full-fledged assault. I could feel his jaws tearing into my arm's flesh," Lowe recounted, painting a vivid picture of the harrowing scene.
"In that moment, I employed every ounce of strength and ingenuity to ward off this dog," he added.
Bleeding profusely, Lowe managed to usher Moose into the backyard, only for the dog to bolt back through the door and renew his attack on Lowe.
"I genuinely felt as though I was engaged in a life-or-death battle, facing off against no ordinary dog, but my very own Moose," he recounted. "Our bond, though nascent—barely three months old—was undeniable. He was my dog, my companion."
Lowe paused to assess the grave state of his arm, observing with alarm as blood jetted several feet into the air. With urgency, he alerted his friends to rush him to the ER while simultaneously calling his wife. His arm ultimately required stitches in "a half-dozen locations."
The following day, the Bachelor alumnus found himself consumed by fear for his children's safety, prompting him to delve into research on "no-kill" shelters. As his parents arrived to take his kids, Moose bolted out the front door, targeting Lowe for a third confrontation.
"Surviving a dog attack is a harrowing ordeal," Lowe confessed. "Reliving it within a dozen hours, seeing that dog charge straight at me again, was a sensation I never wish to endure. My arm, rendered useless by stitches and immobile with pain, left me vulnerable. For a fleeting moment, I stared at Moose, silently pleading, 'Please, let this be the loving Moose I know.'"
Once more, Moose launched into an attack, tearing into Lowe's arm with relentless force. "With every ounce of strength, I managed to wrestle him to the ground. Moose's power and agility were astonishing, yet I clung to him, collar in hand," he recounted. "I was acutely aware that he had already ripped open my arm, and I fought with every fiber of my being, fearing that if he regained his footing, my life was in grave danger."
His family swiftly dialed 911. For ten tense minutes, Lowe lay atop Moose, awaiting the police, who themselves struggled to gain control of the dog.
Despite Moose's actions, Lowe refrained from blaming him, acknowledging that the family had been informed of the dog's troubled past. "As strange as it sounds, we miss our Moose. He was an exceptionally good dog," Lowe concluded, his voice tinged with nostalgia. "We miss him dearly."
