Published: Jun 05 2024

On Tuesday evening, the inaugural Gotham TV Awards witnessed a remarkable triumph for "Baby Reindeer," which emerged victorious in the category of Breakthrough Limited Series. In his acceptance speech, the show's creator and star, Richard Gadd, expressed his astonishment at the show's unexpected popularity.

"I never imagined that this dark, quirky, and often perplexing show would evoke such a universal outpouring of love," Gadd exclaimed. He went on to thank Netflix, his team, and even his parents for "messing him up enough to make him an artist."

Gadd continued, "It's oddly heartwarming to see how a show as unconventional as this has resonated with so many people. I believe it speaks to the fact that countless individuals worldwide are grappling with challenges right now. While I may not have much advice to offer, I do know that nothing is permanent. So, if you're feeling stuck, just keep pushing forward, persevere, persevere, persevere, and I promise you, things will eventually improve."

Meanwhile, "Colin From Accounts" stole the show in the Breakthrough Comedy Series category, while Harriet Dyer, its creator and star, was awarded for her Outstanding Performance in a Comedy Series. Additionally, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" captured the Breakthrough Drama Series accolade, and Andrew Scott's exceptional work in "Ripley" earned him the Outstanding Performance in a Limited Series award, albeit in absentia.

Over the past decade, the Gotham Awards, now 33 years old, have celebrated excellence in television across three categories — Breakthrough Series (over 40 minutes), Breakthrough Series (under 40 minutes), and Outstanding Performance in a New Series. However, 2024 marks a significant milestone as the Gothams host their inaugural, larger-scale award ceremony dedicated exclusively to the television industry. The gala event took place at the illustrious Cipriani 25 venue in New York City, setting the stage for a night of glamour and recognition in the world of television.
