A spin-off series of Game of Thrones, centered around Jon Snow, was in the works, but ultimately shelved by HBO due to its depressing nature. The initial premise depicted Jon living north of the Wall, plagued by PTSD and without his loyal companion Ghost or his trusty sword, Longclaw. However, the network has now pivoted to focus on another Stark: Arya Stark. Although the plot is still in its infancy, rumors suggest it may show her return to Essos after the events of the Game of Thrones finale. Quoc Dang Tran, known for writing Drops of God on Apple TV+, is attached to the project. A source told The Hollywood Reporter, "We are very interested and excited by the prospect of a sequel but also keenly aware of how high the bar of execution needs to be."

However, there's a major obstacle in the series' development: Jon Snow himself. Actor Kit Harington, who plays the character, is vocal about not returning. And he's not alone in his opposition - George R.R. Martin, the creator of the Game of Thrones universe, is also against sequels. He told THR that his upcoming novels would differ significantly from any future series, if made. "Some characters who are alive in my book are going to be dead in the show, and vice versa," he shared.
Meanwhile, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, another Game of Thrones spin-off, is set to premiere on HBO Max on January 18th.
