The Season 3 premiere of CBS’ *Elsbeth* addressed that surprising cast exit—but could the beloved character make a triumphant return down the line?
During the Sunday, October 12, episode, Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) stepped back into action without her trusted partner, Kaya (Carra Patterson), by her side. The absence marked a significant shift, as Kaya had embarked on an undercover assignment in Washington, D.C., a move that provided the show’s creative team with an opportunity to broaden the horizons of this acclaimed police procedural.
“I wish I could say there was some grand master plan, but a lot of it comes down to seeing where the conversation leads in the writers’ room,” executive producer Jonathan Tolins revealed exclusively to *Us Weekly* at the Season 3 screening event, held in partnership with Know Your Lemons and Tribeca at AMC Lincoln Square. “When something unexpected happens, it excites us. We know that’s the direction we should pursue.”
Tolins hinted that Captain Wagner’s (Wendell Pierce) storyline wouldn’t dominate the screen time, adding, “We’re also introducing some new characters who challenge Elsbeth’s views on honesty and trust. With Kaya’s departure, she’s forging fresh connections.”
When asked whether Kaya would resurface, Tolins confirmed fans would “definitely see” more of Patterson’s character, with teasers from previous episodes already hinting at her return. Preston, 58, also shared her insights with *Us Weekly* on how the show is adapting to the changes.
“This season, it’s working seamlessly with the detectives. But with every case Elsbeth takes on, she won’t always partner with the same detective. We already had that dynamic established with different detectives cycling in, and now we’re doing the same with uniformed officers,” Preston explained. “She’ll connect with people in unique ways.”
The actress went on to express her enthusiasm for the shakeup, three seasons into the CBS hit.
“It keeps the show fresh and keeps Elsbeth on her toes. She’s collaborating with new faces, younger colleagues, and people she hasn’t met before. She’s getting to know them,” she noted. “I don’t know if we’ll ever settle on just one partner. Anything is possible. But I truly adore the new people we’re working with now.”
*Elsbeth*, which premiered in 2024, reintroduced the titular character following her appearances on *The Good Wife* and *The Good Fight*. The first two seasons chronicled Elsbeth’s evolution into a de facto detective aiding NYPD investigations. Preston stars alongside Pierce and Patterson.
Fans were taken aback when Season 2 concluded with Patterson’s departure as a series regular.
“This has been in the works since the beginning of Season 2,” Preston told *Us Weekly* exclusively in May. “We wanted to honor her character by elevating her to detective. It was thrilling for her character’s journey. Less thrilling for us, though, because we love Carra. I love Carra, and I obviously love working with her.”
Preston assured fans that this isn’t the last they’ll see of Kaya, adding, “She’s still part of the show—just in a different capacity. It’s great because it adds conflict and challenges for Elsbeth to grapple with. It’s going to deepen my character.”
*Elsbeth* airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS, with new episodes streaming the following day on Paramount+.
