Jimmy Kimmel, a longtime and vocal critic of President Donald Trump, made a revealing announcement amidst Trump's return to the Oval Office: he had secured Italian citizenship. During a recent guest appearance on The Sarah Silverman Podcast, the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! engaged in a lively discussion with Sarah Silverman about the current political landscape in the United States and how some celebrities, notably Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O'Donnell, had even opted to leave the country in anticipation of Trump's second term.
"A myriad of individuals I know are contemplating their options for citizenship elsewhere," Silverman remarked, to which Kimmel candidly confessed, "I, too, have obtained Italian citizenship. It's a reality for me now."
He further elaborated, "The situation is... beyond what anyone could have imagined. It's infinitely worse. It's astonishing. In fact, I'd venture to say it's probably even more dire than Trump himself could have envisioned."
The relationship between Trump and Kimmel has long been fraught with animosity, with both figures frequently taking potshots at each other over the years. The comedian has become notorious for lampooning the president and his administration's controversial policies during his late-night talk show. In turn, Trump often retaliates on his Truth Social platform, recently advocating for the cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel Live! following CBS's announcement that Late Night with Stephen Colbert would conclude next year.
Kimmel also imparted wisdom to Silverman, emphasizing that "the door must remain ajar" for those who express remorse for voting for Trump. He urged Democrats to embrace, rather than condemn, these individuals. "I don't subscribe to the 'you supported him, so fuck you' mentality," he said. "If you wish to change your perspective, it's incredibly challenging. If you're willing to admit you were mistaken, that's an endeavor that's both difficult and rare. And for that, you are welcome here."
