John Goodman proudly showcased his transformed physique at the glitzy premiere of the new Smurfs movie, after shedding an impressive 200 pounds in recent years. The 73-year-old Roseanne veteran arrived in style at the Los Angeles event for his latest Smurfs film on Sunday, donning a sharp navy blue suit complemented by a crisp white-collared shirt, an intricately patterned tie, and polished brown dress shoes. As Papa Smurf in the upcoming animated adventure, Goodman beamed a broad grin at the paparazzi, radiating confidence.
At his heaviest, Goodman reportedly tipped the scales at nearly 400 pounds, according to the New York Post, but he has since embarked on a remarkable transformation journey, shedding about half of that weight through various means. His slimmer silhouette first made a red carpet splash in 2023 at the 62nd Monte-Carlo TV Festival.
The Conners star's weight loss odyssey began in earnest in 2007 when he weighed 392 pounds and made a pivotal decision to abstain from alcohol. In a 2011 chat with David Letterman, Goodman candidly shared, "Every spring after Roseanne wrapped, I'd drop 60 pounds, only to gain it all back plus some each year. It's a lifelong process for me." Embracing a holistic approach, he eventually enlisted the help of a health coach, which facilitated significant changes such as cutting sugar and maintaining a consistent exercise routine.
Flashing a triumphant smile at the Smurfs premiere (Getty), Goodman recounted in a 2017 ABC interview his past yo-yo dieting cycles, where he'd reward himself after weight loss with indulgences, only to revert to old habits. "This time, I wanted to take it slowly," he emphasized. "Moving and exercising are crucial now; I'm at an age where sitting still isn't an option."
A year later, in an interview with AARP, Goodman credited "portion control" as the linchpin of his successful weight loss. "I used to stuff anything and everything into my mouth," he confessed. "I don't want to be a cautionary tale when the weight creeps back on – like eating Crisco straight from the can with a spoon and a side of powdered sugar."
Goodman's latest red carpet appearance comes amidst revelations that he hasn't spoken to his former on-screen spouse, Roseanne Barr, in nearly a decade. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, when asked about reconnecting with Barr following the conclusion of the Roseanne spin-off, The Conners, Goodman revealed, "No, I doubt she wants to talk to me. We haven't communicated in seven or eight years." When pressed if the silence made filming The Conners challenging, he responded, "Not at all. We have a fantastic cast, and everyone shines brightly."
Reflecting on his early days working with Barr, Goodman reminisced, "We hit it off instantly. She made me laugh, I made her laugh, and it was pure joy. We had millions of viewers tuning in back then – 20, 30 million people. Times have changed drastically, but it was a magical era."
