Kenan Thompson Teases “A Lot of Change” at ‘SNL’ Next Season

Published: May 27 2025

Kenan Thompson is subtly dropping hints that "significant changes" are on the horizon for the upcoming season of 'Saturday Night Live' (SNL) in terms of its casting lineup. In a recent conversation with Page Six, the comedic veteran and long-standing SNL cast member reflected on the bittersweet conclusion of the historic 50th season, which culminated with Scarlett Johansson's hosting gig on May 17th.

"This year, in particular, feels like a prelude to potentially major shifts next year," Thompson continued, his voice tinged with a mixture of emotions. "You wish everyone could stay forever, but understanding that decisions may be looming this summer... it's akin to longing for your children to remain young."

While there has been no official announcement regarding the casting for SNL's 51st season, whispers of a cast overhaul have been circulating online with increasing fervor. Thompson, who has been an integral part of the NBC sketch comedy show since its 29th season in 2003, revealed that he himself has yet to ink a contract for the forthcoming season.

"The future remains shrouded in mystery," he elaborated with clarity. "I harbor no desire to obstruct the progress of burgeoning talent, nor do I yearn to become the jaded, worn-out standby. Fortunately, such stagnation is not the norm at SNL, but in the tapestry of life, there are no surefire promises, I suppose."

Speculations among fans about who might be bidding adieu to the show after its latest run are rife, although SNL is unlikely to unveil any modifications to its 17-member ensemble until closer to the season 51 premiere in the early autumn. However, a shake-up isn't out of the question, especially considering that several cast members, including Thompson, Michael Che, Colin Jost, Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner, and Ego Nwodim, have been with the show for seven seasons or more.
