Lily Allen opens up with unfiltered honesty. In a revealing segment of her July 1st episode of the 'Miss Me?' Podcast, the "Smile" singer delved into her current contraceptive choice, detailing her encounters with unplanned pregnancies and the decisions she made to terminate them. "I'm currently sporting an IUD," Lily confessed. "I think I'm on my third or maybe fourth; I recall a time when it was a chaotic mess. Pregnancy seemed to be a constant companion."
She continued, her tone playful yet candid as she sang about her experiences, "Abortions, I've had quite a few, though I can't pinpoint the exact number. It's a blur, yes, a blur." Sharing daughters Ethel, 13, and Marnie, 11, with her ex-husband Sam Cooper, Lily estimated, "Perhaps four or five, around that mark."
As her cohost, Miquita Oliver, shared her own abortion experiences, Lily pointed to a specific incident that now strikes her differently. "I recall a time when I got pregnant, and the man footed the bill for my abortion. I thought it was romantic at the time," Lily reminisced, her voice tinged with irony. "Looking back, I don't see it as generous or romantic; it was a long-term investment with strings attached."
"Let me tell you how romantic it truly was," she added, a hint of self-deprecation in her voice. "I don't think he even bothered to text me afterward. To be honest, I was a bit nuts back then. Still am, in my own way."
Lily has always been transparent with her fans, sharing the joys and sorrows of her personal life. This includes her heart-wrenching story of losing her and Sam's first child late into the pregnancy in 2010, an experience that landed her in the hospital with septicemia. "The stitch gave way, and I went into labor prematurely. The baby was tiny," Lily recounted during a 2018 interview on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. "As I delivered, the doctors said, 'There was a pulse, and now there's none.' The umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck; he was just too small to fight."
Sharing how she conceived Ethel shortly after losing her son George, Lily explained the complexities of motherhood amidst the aftermath of trauma. "Ethel was quite ill during her first eight months. Just three months after her birth, I found out I was pregnant with Marnie," Lily revealed. "Babies became my sole focus during that challenging period."
