Ashley Carpenter, a star of Love Is Blind, insists on nothing less than perfection – a trait she inherited from her father, Paul Carpenter. Despite some backlash against Paul for his probing questions during his initial meeting with Alex Henderson, Ashley defends his line of inquiry and dismisses the notion that she's "oppressed."
In fact, Ashley views the situation quite differently. She notes that the scene was heavily edited and that Paul, a seasoned divorce attorney, naturally asks many questions. "This is a reality TV show. There's a lot of editing, and a two-and-a-half-hour dinner was shortened into a five-to-10-minute segment," she told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published on March 12. "People say, 'You and your mom didn't talk. Your brother didn't talk. You're oppressed.' And I was like, 'No, I was too emotional to speak because I hadn't seen my family for like three weeks.' I was so emotional."

The 34-year-old explains that her dad "loves" to learn about people and "challenge them in the right ways," but has consistently "asked these hard questions for 40 years of his life." She adds, "We also need to keep in mind that this isn't my boyfriend that my dad is meeting [where] we have a couple years to get to know him. I'm marrying this man in three weeks, so yeah, my dad's gonna have a lot of questions."
Although she understands that Paul's interrogation "may make some people uncomfortable," Ashley can also empathize with her father's perspective. After all, he sensed that Alex wasn't a good fit for his daughter before Ashley realized it herself and ended things at the altar.
"Trust me, growing up, I definitely was uncomfortable with being grilled with questions like, 'Where were you?'" she said. "But that's who he is, and that's why I love him for it, because he is that protector of me."
The claims manager adds, "For a long time, [my family] saw me get hurt and lied to for so long. I hope people want someone like my dad to ask those questions for them if they are not strong enough to do so."
As for Alex's perspective on their conversation, he found Paul's questioning to be "pretty aggressive."
"It was definitely a difficult conversation for me," the 31-year-old told Today in February. "There's no real way to fully respond with the full scorched-earth policy. But also, how are you going to respond and show that you're a real person here, and actually able to stand up for yourself? So it was a pretty thin line for me."
