The story revolves around a struggling country Western star (Powell), whose life and career are in free fall. Cline will play the star's girlfriend, adding depth and complexity to the already intriguing storyline. Universal has set a Feb. 5, 2027 release date for the project.

Apatow, who has had a longstanding relationship with Universal since his directorial debut in 2005 with The 40-Year Old Virgin, is also producing the feature alongside Powell. Dan Cohen, Powell's partner at the duo's Barnstorm banner, which has a first-look deal with the studio, is also producing. Kevin Misher, who once served as Universal's president of production in the late 1990s, is producing through his shingle, Misher Films.

Erik Baiers, Senior Executive VP of Production Development, and Jacqueline Garell, Director of Production Development, are overseeing the project on behalf of Universal.

Since 2020, Cline has been a leading star in Outer Banks, one of Netflix's top shows. The series' fifth and final season is due to premiere later this year. In the film world, the actress has appeared in Netflix's Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Sony's I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, and Amazon's romantic drama The Map That Leads to You. She next appears with Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz in Lionsgate's Day Drinker, which is due out later this year.

Cline is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360, Bold Talent Agency, and Hirsch Wallerstein.
