Maren Morris has recently made a stunning confession regarding the plagiarism of Dolly Parton's iconic hit, "9 to 5." During a guest appearance on the latest episode of the Zach Sang Show, the talented country musician disclosed, "On my second album, there's a track called 'All My Favourite People,' and I vividly recall it being just two weeks before the album's release when my mom casually mentioned, 'I've noticed that one of the verses/melodies sounds somewhat similar to "9 to 5."'"
The 35-year-old continued, "I believe that every songwriter's deepest fear is unintentionally crafting a melody that already exists, and this happens more frequently than one might think." As a seasoned performer known for her hit "Chasing You," she elaborated on her songwriting process, stating that she collaborates with numerous individuals and plays her songs countless times for loved ones before they reach the public domain.
"There's always a system of checks and balances in place," emphasized Maren. She pointed out that extended collaborations provide "multiple perspectives and experts in the room who can assist in determining when a melody might be too close to another song."
As a member of the Highwomen and the crooner behind "Bones," Maren admitted that her "stomach dropped" when her mother pointed out the noticeable similarities between her track and Dolly's timeless song. "She was genuinely trying to give me a heads-up, and I listened to it right away," she shared.
However, Maren also revealed Dolly's graceful reaction, adding, "It was close enough that she felt terrible about what had transpired and sought a way to reach out to Dolly's team to offer her a songwriting credit on the track." Dolly's magnanimous gesture was commendable, as many of their peers might have taken a different route, given that "numerous other artists are litigious and would wait for the song to generate as much profit as possible before pursuing litigation."
