"Do you expect us… to scrutinize ourselves?" "We must shake things up a bit in that department." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for its upcoming streaming series titled "Dept. Q," another captivating crime thriller mystery designed to enthrall true crime enthusiasts. Slated for release in just a matter of weeks, at the end of May, this series promises to be a gripping watch.
Carl, a former top-notch detective, is haunted by guilt stemming from an attack that left his partner paralyzed and another officer dead. Upon his return to duty, Carl is reassigned to the cold case division, a realm that will come to dominate his life. Brought to us by Scott Frank, the writer, and director behind "The Queen's Gambit," "Dept. Q" stars Matthew Goode as DCI Carl Morck, a brash yet brilliant detective heading a cold case unit in Edinburgh. Here, he leads an unlikely ensemble of misfits on a quest to unravel various unsolved mysteries.
"Dept. Q" is a nine-episode procedural crime series produced by Netflix in collaboration with Left Bank Pictures. In addition to Goode, the series boasts a stellar cast including Chloe Pirrie, Alexej Manvelov, Kelly Macdonald, and Leah Byrne. It promises to exceed the standards set by most detective dramas, piquing my curiosity immensely.
DCI Carl Morck is undeniably brilliant in his profession but a nightmare as a colleague. His sharp-tongued sarcasm has alienated him from his peers within the Edinburgh police force. Following a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a young policeman and the paralysis of his partner, Carl finds himself banished to the basement, the sole occupant of Department Q—a newly established cold case unit seen merely as a PR stunt to divert public attention from the inadequacies and failures of an underfunded and struggling police force eager to be rid of him.
However, somewhat accidentally, Carl begins to assemble a team of misfits eager to prove themselves. When the cold trail of a prominent civil servant who vanished years ago starts to warm up, Carl reverts to what he does best—rocking the boat and refusing to accept defeat. "Dept. Q" is a series created, written, and directed by American writer-filmmaker Scott Frank, renowned for his screenplays such as "Out of Sight," "Minority Report," "The Interpreter," "The Lookout," "Marley & Me," "The Wolverine," and "Logan," as well as the creator of "The Queen's Gambit" and "Monsieur Spade" series.
The script is penned by Stephen Greenhorn, Colette Kane, and Chandni Lakhani, adapted from the novels authored by Jussi Adler-Olsen. Directed by Scott Frank, the series is produced by Flitcraft and Left Bank Pictures, with executive producers Rob Bullock, Scott Frank, and Andy Harries at the helm. Netflix will debut Frank's "Dept. Q" on its streaming platform starting May 29th, 2025.
