Matthew McConaughey Starring in Barbie Sequel? Margot Robbie Says...

Published: Sep 17 2025

Is Matthew McConaughey merely a Ken in the making? The "Interstellar" actor recently revealed his keen interest in taking on the role of the "King of the Kens" if a sequel to the 2023 blockbuster "Barbie" ever materializes—and he's just received the ultimate endorsement from none other than Margot Robbie.

In fact, when Craig Melvin mentioned on the September 16 episode of "Today" that they had inquired about Matthew's potential as Ken, Margot's eyes lit up. "Did he say he'd do it?" she asked eagerly. Upon hearing the affirmative response, the 35-year-old actress couldn't contain her excitement, exclaiming, "Wonderful! Thank you for doing that."

As for Matthew, the 55-year-old actor was thrilled to be considered for the role on the same "Today" episode, especially when he saw the mock-up images of himself as the character—a concept previously suggested by "Barbie" star America Ferrera to be dubbed the "King of the Kens." "It's already coming to life," the "Magic Mike" alum gushed. "It'd be hard to say no to that, wouldn't it?"

However, there's still no official confirmation that a "Barbie" sequel is even in the works, as Margot previously explained. "We poured everything into that movie," she told E! News in 2023. "I can't even fathom what could come next."

And if a sequel were to happen, it would all hinge on the film's writer and director, Greta Gerwig. "It would be up to Greta," Margot added. "I wouldn't do it without Greta."

As Greta herself pointed out, she's not even sure she and her co-writer—and real-life partner—Noah Baumbach, have a solid idea for a follow-up yet. "At this moment, it's all I've got," she told The New York Times after the film's release. "I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I'll never have another idea and everything I've ever wanted to do, I did." The "Lady Bird" director further admitted, "I wouldn't want to squash anybody else's dream, but for me, at this moment, I'm at totally zero."

But even if she did stumble upon a brilliant concept, chances are the Oscar-nominated filmmaker would keep it under wraps until it was fully fleshed out. "I find that whenever I've shared ideas too early, they tend to go bad, and then the movie isn't any good," Greta confessed during a 2023 WGA panel, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. "I don't like to talk about things too early or pitch ideas or show treatments too soon because it feels like it's somehow going to wreck what the movie is."
