Rashida Jones and Meg Ryan have gracefully embarked on a journey to enlarge the star-studded ensemble of "Good Sex," the enchanting romantic comedy helmed by Lena Dunham for Netflix. Joining the already illustrious cast featuring Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo, and the multifaceted artist Tucker Pillsbury (also renowned as the singer-songwriter Role Model), Dunham has penned this heartwarming tale as well.
"Good Sex" revolves around Ally, a pragmatic couples therapist portrayed by Portman, who, after a decade-long tumultuous relationship and stepping into her 40s, finds herself reluctantly venturing back into New York's vibrant dating scene. However, as Netflix's intriguing logline suggests, Ally encounters more than she anticipated when she crosses paths with two gentlemen – one in his twenties (Pillsbury) and another in his fifties (Ruffalo) – who reveal that the formula for great sex defies all conventional norms.
Ryan steps into the shoes of Portman's free-spirited therapist and mentor, offering advice that resonates with the essence of a rom-com legend. Meanwhile, Jones embodies Portman's outspoken and newly divorced best friend, adding a raunchy twist to the narrative.
Dunham, who expertly navigated the intricacies of relationships and sex through her groundbreaking HBO series "Girls," is producing the film under her Good Thing Going Productions banner alongside partner Michael Cohen. Portman and Sophie Mas are also producing under their MountainA flag.
For Jones, "Good Sex" marks a triumphant return to the feature film realm since her 2020 appearance in Sofia Coppola's comedy "On the Rocks." She recently shone in Apple TV+'s mystical drama "Sunny." Ryan, renowned for her iconic roles in rom-com classics such as "When Harry Met Sally," "You've Got Mail," and "Sleepless in Seattle," cementing her status as the genre's queen, also directed and starred in her own romantic comedy, "What Happens Later," featuring David Duchovny, in 2023.
Jones is represented by UTA and Schreck Rose, while Ryan is managed by Gersh.
