Meghan Trainor Addresses Criticism Over Using Surrogate for Baby Girl

Meghan Trainor is fiercely protective of her precious baby girl. The "All About That Bass" singer, who revealed that she and her husband Daryl Sabara welcomed their third child, Mikey Moon, via surrogate in January, recently opened up about her motherhood journey. Meghan admitted that she was apprehensive about facing backlash for using a surrogate, a fear that was only exacerbated after she experienced a barrage of criticism over her 60-pound weight loss.

"I didn't even glance at the comments," she said during an April 9 episode of Kylie Kelce's Not Gonna Lie podcast. "I knew fully well that after all the hate I was already getting for changing, just for looking different because I took care of myself, they would only hate me more for this. It was a nightly cloud of tears filled with worry."

"I want my daughter to come into this world without everyone attacking her for the way she got here. That was all going through my head," she added. "But my team was with me, my therapist was with me, everyone was so supportive. My husband was like, 'Everyone can suck our asses.'"

Beyond fears of public criticism, Meghan and her husband had their own worries about having a daughter via surrogate. "We had heartbreaking, big decision-making to do," the Grammy winner explained. "And I was struggling with my health and almost towards an autoimmune disease. So there were so many conversations back and forth. Then we decided that the safest way was to do it through a surrogate."

The 34-year-old also encountered anxiety during that time, sharing that she often felt like she was going "crazy" knowing her daughter "was alive in someone else." "There's so much that goes into it," she said, "but we had an amazing surrogate who was so good to us and texts us everything and we got to talk all the time."

Despite her struggles, the "Lips Are Moving" singer recognized that there were "good parts" of the surrogacy process. For one, Meghan—who had delivered her two oldest kids via C-section—didn't have to physically recover after the birth of her daughter.

"I'll tell you what's different is not healing from a C-section with a newborn," she said. "That was different. I could be so present with her and with my other kids. They're not like, 'Don't I have to be worried that they're jumping on me.' I could pick them up and be fully present."

Indeed, Meghan and Daryl were more than present for their first daughter's birth, sharing sweet pictures from the special day in a joint Instagram post on Jan. 20. "Our baby girl Mikey Moon Trainor has finally made it to the world thanks to our incredible, superwoman surrogate," they wrote in the caption. "We are over the moon in love with this precious girl."
