The air on the Today show became charged when Jenna Bush Hager attempted to delve into Minka Kelly's romantic life. On Tuesday, November 18, as Kelly visited Today with Jenna & Friends, co-hosted by Olivia Munn and Bush Hager, to promote her new Netflix holiday film, Champagne Problems, the conversation took an unexpected turn.
After discussing the movie, Bush Hager, 43, gently tried to transition into a discussion about Kelly's relationship with Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds. "With the holidays and love in the air, you have a great love in your life right now," she said, slightly stumbling over her words. "If you feel comfortable, talk about your relationship."
Kelly, 45, visibly appeared taken aback by the sudden change in topic. But the morning show host continued, "I think you posted a birthday message saying he healed wounds he didn't inflict. That's beautiful."
"Yeah, it is beautiful," agreed Kelly, star of Ransom Canyon. "I feel very lucky; he's a really good guy." Bush Hager then got the message. "Okay, it sounds like you don't want to talk about it. That's fine," she said. "I guess we'll move on then to the video of him."
Munn, 45, then jumped in to share a story about Reynolds, 38, with whom she had worked in the past. "I love Dan. I did his music video, it was the first thing I did after COVID," she said, referring to the 2021 video for "Cutthroat."
"I was actually pregnant and no one had known yet," Munn continued. "But anyway, he was so kind. I love the whole band and I'm really happy for you." Kelly agreed, saying her boyfriend and his band were "the best."
"They're all the best," Kelly added. "And I think there's something similar to the movie's theme—love hits you when you least expect it."
Kelly and Reynolds have been dating since 2022, connecting after being introduced by a mutual friend following Reynolds' divorce. They spoke on the phone for a month before meeting in person and Reynolds told PEOPLE about the "really strange and awesome way" they bonded. He was working on Imagine Dragons' sixth studio album, Loom, and would send Kelly music he was writing. She would return the favor by sharing snippets from her memoir, Tell Me Everything.
"She was very scared for me to read the book because we hadn't met, just as much as I was scared for her to hear a song that I'd written," Reynolds said. "But we shared it and it ended up being a really beautiful thing and brought us a lot closer. I think it helped us both understand each other on a deeper level quite quickly."
Earlier this year, Reynolds entered Kelly's world while making a cameo in Ransom Canyon. Kelly told PEOPLE that "he came to visit [the set] and everyone—all the producers and writers—just naturally fell in love with him."
"It's easy to love Dan," Kelly said. "He was such a good sport."
