Nicole Kidman Speaks Out About Keith Urban Divorce for the First Time

Published: Mar 12 2026

Nicole Kidman recently shared her first thoughts on her separation from Keith Urban since filing for divorce from the country music star in September 2025. In a wide-ranging interview with Variety, published on March 11, Kidman, 58, spoke about her upcoming Practical Magic sequel, Prime Video series Scarpetta, and her personal life over the past year.

"I am doing well because I am always moving towards what's good," she told the outlet when asked if she was "doing all right" since her separation from Urban. "What I'm grateful for is my family and keeping them as is and moving forward. That's all that matters to me," Kidman added. "Everything else, I don't discuss out of respect. I'm staying in a place where we are a family, and that's what we'll continue to be. My beautiful girls, my darlings, who are suddenly women."

Kidman and Urban, both 58, originally met in 2005 and married the following year. They share two daughters: Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 15. Her comments on her divorce came after Variety asked her at the top of the interview whether "every year is probably the year of Nicole Kidman." "Well, not last year. I was quiet. I had other things going on. I was in my shell," she replied. When asked if she was "ready to come out of [her] shell," Kidman added, "Now I'm in a place of saying, '2026. Here we go.' I have Practical Magic with [Sandra Bullock]. I'll be in full witch mode."

According to previous reports by PEOPLE, Kidman's divorce filing, which she filed in Davidson County, Tennessee, stated that the former couple "experienced marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences" that led her to "institute divorce proceedings against" Urban. The couple had already made an agreement on how to divide their personal belongings, per the agreement viewed by PEOPLE in September. The pair reached a settlement and finalized their divorce on Jan. 6: Kidman was granted primary custody of their daughters at her Nashville residence, while both parents agreed to hold joint responsibility for major decisions regarding their daughters' lives moving forward.

When asked by Variety if she had ever considered directing movies herself, Kidman emphasized a desire to spend more time with her daughters in the coming months. "I've circled it. But then I've been too busy or too tired. There are still things I want to do as an actor. I want to do theater again," she said. "I've done Broadway and the West End a couple of times. But I'm interested in off-Broadway and even some regional theater at some point, like in Chicago. Those things are different and exciting; you just need to get your children to a certain age to be able to do it. Right now is not the time for me to do that; I've got to take care of these kids. That's sort of in my 'Future' folder. I've got to fill this summer with kid stuff."

Practical Magic 2, Kidman's next movie, will hit theaters on Sept. 11.
