Nikki Glaser playfully poked fun at Hollywood's elite, who, despite their vast support for Vice President Harris's White House aspirations, failed to propel her to victory against the then-incumbent President-elect Trump. "Rest assured, tonight is not about roasting you," the comedian assured her audience during her monologue at the 81st annual Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles on Sunday. "How could I, with all your fame, talent, and immense power?" the 40-year-old Glaser continued, her tone teeming with irony.
"You could literally achieve anything," she remarked, referring to the nation's most prominent performers, "except guide the nation in casting their votes." Leading figures from Hollywood had rallyed behind Harris in anticipation of the November presidential election, with A-listers like Jennifer Lopez, George Clooney, Viola Davis, and Scarlett Johansson lending their weight to the vice president's campaign against Trump.
"But hey, it's alright; you'll nail it next time—if there is one," Glaser chuckled lightly, a hint of trepidation about the country's political landscape lurking in her quip. "I'm scared," she confessed to the gathering before playfully addressing "Wicked" star Ariana Grande, "Ariana, keep my finger ready."
In an interview with ITK last year, Glaser revealed her tendency to steer clear of political jokes stemming from anger. "When I'm too furious, it might be amusing, but I'm so angry that I'm not funny anymore, and people can feel that," she had said in March. "It turns you off watching someone give in to rage and lose control."
