Presley Chweneyagae, a South African actor whose international stardom soared as the lead in the Academy Award-winning film "Tsotsi," has passed away at the age of 40. "We confirm with immeasurable sorrow the untimely demise of one of South Africa's most talented and cherished actors," announced MLA, Chweneyagae's long-standing agency, in a statement on Tuesday, without disclosing the details or cause of his death.
"The nation grieves the loss of a gifted raconteur whose prowess illuminated our screens and touched our hearts," tweeted the official X account of the South African government. "Your legacy will endure through the potent narratives you conveyed."
Fikile Mbalula, the secretary-general of the African National Congress, also paid his respects on X. "Heart-wrenching to hear about the passing of Presley Chweneyagae. A true titan of South African cinema and theater, his impact in 'Tsotsi,' 'The River,' and beyond will linger forever. Condolences to his family, friends, and all who were mesmerized by his brilliance."
Born on October 19, 1984, in Mafikeng, South Africa, Chweneyagae embarked on his acting journey at a tender age, enrolling in acting classes at just 10. His breakthrough role was nothing short of historic, securing the character of David, alias Tsotsi, in Gavin Hood's intense 2005 crime thriller "Tsotsi." Set in a Johannesburg township, Chweneyagae portrayed a petty criminal who steals a car and discovers a baby in the backseat, leading him to transform his life.
"Tsotsi" garnered immense praise from critics, with special commendation for Chweneyagae's performance. The film was nominated for a Golden Globe and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, becoming the first South African film to secure an Oscar. This triumph cemented Chweneyagae's status as one of South Africa's most renowned actors.
Beyond feature films, Chweneyagae also enjoyed great success in domestic television, arguably being more recognized in South Africa for his leading role in the popular telenovela "The River." Set in Pretoria's diamond mining industry, Chweneyagae's scheming, villainous, and charismatic Thuso 'Cobra' Mokoena became a beloved character among fans, leading to his own spin-off series "Cobrizi."
"The River," which aired from 2018 to 2024, earned Chweneyagae a South African Film and Television Award in 2019 and propelled him to streaming fame beyond South Africa, as the show gained popularity in other African regions.
In addition to film and TV, Chweneyagae was deeply entrenched in theater, boasting an extensive resume and starring in several Shakespeare productions. He was also a playwright and director, co-writing the acclaimed stage play "Relativity" with Paul Grootboom and directing the award-winning production "CELL NO 4."
