Richard Gere Slammed by Paul Simon’s Daughter for Selling Her Childhood Home to Developers Who Will Demolish It

Paul Simon's daughter, Lulu, has unleashed a scathing tirade against Richard Gere on her Instagram Stories. On Tuesday, July 8th, the 30-year-old singer vented her frustration over Gere's decision to sell her cherished childhood home to real estate developers. The once-beloved property is now being razed to the ground to make way for nine new residences.

Lulu alleges that Gere made a solemn promise to her family that he would "preserve the land" when he acquired it from her parents, the iconic musician Paul Simon and his wife Edie Brickell, for a whopping $10.8 million in 2022. She claims that this was a "precondition of his purchase" aimed at safeguarding the home, although she refrains from elaborating further on the alleged agreement.

"Just in case anyone was still wondering whether I harbor resentment towards Richard Gere – let me assure you, I most certainly do!" Lulu declared in bold white text superimposed over a selfie and a screenshot of a news article detailing the impending demolition of her childhood home. She further lambasted Gere, writing, "He bought my childhood home, promised to cherish the land as a condition of his purchase, yet never actually lived there and sold it to a developer to be carved into nine separate lots. Hate! Him!"

A representative for Gere did not promptly respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

In a subsequent slide, Lulu's fury intensified as she penned, "I sincerely hope my deceased pets, buried in that backyard, haunt you until you descend into a slow, relentless spiral of madness." This caption accompanied an old photograph of Gere seemingly surrounded by the cats and dogs that once brought joy to Lulu's childhood.

Her post was then followed by a meme featuring a frog perched against a vibrant sky, accompanied by the caption, "Time will eventually bury your enemies six feet under."

Attempts to reach representatives for both Lulu and Gere yielded no immediate responses from PEOPLE.

Two years after Gere purchased the New Canaan, Connecticut, property from Paul Simon and Edie Brickell, he and his wife Alejandra Gere officially sold it for $10.75 million in October 2024. In May of that year, it came to light that the historic 1930s home was slated for demolition to pave the way for a nine-property development. This news emerged after the couple had already relocated to Madrid, Spain, to be closer to Alejandra's family, with whom they share sons Alexander, 6, and James, 5. Alejandra is also the mother of son Albert, 11, from her previous marriage to Govind Friedland, while Gere shares son Homer, 25, with his ex-wife Carey Lowell.

"For Alejandra, it will be wondrous to be closer to her family, lifelong friends, and cultural roots," Gere shared with Vanity Fair Spain in April 2024. "She was incredibly gracious to spend six years in my world, so it's only just that I grant her at least another six years in hers."

Alejandra has since revealed that they plan to return to the United States in a "few years."

Despite the property's fate being sealed for demolition, salvage experts from Hudson Valley House Parts in New York stepped in to rescue some of the home's architectural treasures for repurposing. An Instagram Reel shared in May provided an inside glimpse of the grand estate and the historic pieces that were saved.

"Our team has been mesmerized by this estate over the past month as we worked on-site to salvage numerous architectural elements," they captioned the post. "Formerly owned by Richard Gere, who bought the property from Paul Simon and Edie Brickell, this 1930s home is destined for demolition with the aim of dividing the 32 acres into nine expansive lots," the caption continued.
