Alaska Thunderfuck has gracefully stepped into a new chapter of her life's narrative. The esteemed alumnus of "RuPaul's Drag Race" revealed that she and Matthew Herrmann have become engaged following a heartfelt proposal in her Pennsylvania hometown, where he knelt before her in a romantic gesture. On August 4, the reality TV star, who finished as the runner-up during Season 5, shared with Entertainment Weekly in a statement, "My longtime partner Matthew Herrmann proposed to me yesterday, right after my grandma's 90th birthday celebration." Adding a personal touch, Alaska (real name Justin Andrew Honard) continued, "I love him so much and he's the best."
The Season 5 runner-up, who later triumphed in "All Stars" Season 2, flaunted her dazzling silver engagement ring on Instagram on the same day, captioning the photo with two ring emojis and two smiling emojis adorned with hearts. Fellow "Drag Race" contestants couldn't contain their excitement over this milestone. Rosé from Season 13 penned, "Love you :) Congratulations to you both," while Miss Peppermint from Season 9 simply exclaimed, "Congrats mama!"
Matthew, a producer based in Los Angeles, has always been Alaska's staunchest cheerleader. When the drag queen's musical, "DRAG: The Musical," made its debut, he proudly eulogized her hard work on Instagram in January, writing, "I am so so proud of you." For Alaska, who was previously in a four-year relationship with Season 4 winner Sharon Needles until 2013, this musical was a seven-year labor of love, conceived when Tomas Costanza and Ashley Gordon approached her with a collaboration opportunity.
"I wanted the show to be firmly rooted in the drag queens' terrain," the 40-year-old confided to The Theatre Times in December. "I didn't want to pen a story about straight people with drag queens as mere accessories; I yearned to mirror the drag queens' universe." While Alaska aspired to showcase the "glitz, glamour, feathers, and rhinestones," she was equally eager to depict the "genuine elements of the drag world—the bar that reeks, the sticky floor, the non-functional toilet." Despite the inevitable highs and lows, she elaborated, "I am immersed in the drag realm; I live and breathe it. It's the ocean, and I am its fish."
