Sally Struthers has opened up about some less than favorable recollections of Betty White during an appearance on the January 13th episode of "Let's Talk About That!" hosted by Larry Saperstein and Jacob Bellotti. The 77-year-old actress, reflecting on her past encounters with White, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 99, shared intimate insights into their interactions.
Struthers revealed that the house featured as the exterior of the iconic "Golden Girls" residence was located merely "up the street" from her Los Angeles Brentwood neighborhood home. With a poignant tone, she expressed her desire to discuss White now that she has passed, saying, "I understand everyone adored her. They adored her immensely. Fans even signed petitions to have her guest-host 'Saturday Night Live.' I'm aware of all that, but my experience with her wasn't as delightful." She labeled White as a "deeply passive-aggressive individual."
The "Gilmore Girls" actress recounted a particularly memorable incident at White's house while working on a pilot for a new game show. White instructed her housekeeper to serve them snacks. "The plate was placed in the center, filled with cookies, I believe," Struthers narrated. "As I reached for a cookie, she公开宣言, right in front of everyone, 'Oh, I wouldn't do that if I were you, dear. You don't need a cookie.'"
The hosts were taken aback. "She openly fat-shamed me in front of everyone else in the room," Struthers continued. "I thought to myself, 'That's really not kind.'"
Conversely, Struthers held fond memories of another "Golden Girls" star, Bea Arthur. Arthur made a guest appearance on "All in the Family" during its second season as Maude, Jean Stapleton's Edith Bunker's cousin. "Bea Arthur walked in like a force of nature," Struthers reminisced about the late actress, who passed away in 2009 at 86. She recalled pre-filming run-throughs for producers and network executives, where the cast would often struggle to elicit laughter from them as they were too preoccupied with ensuring the lines were delivered verbatim.
However, Arthur was "filthier than a drunken sailor," according to Struthers, who shared that Arthur would pepper her lines with expletives to shock the male audience members. Arthur eventually starred in the "All in the Family" spin-off titled "Maude" before joining the cast of "Golden Girls."
Struthers also disclosed that she frequently bumped into Arthur at the grocery store, ending up in fits of laughter with her down the aisles. "She would trash-talk everyone we knew," the actress chuckled. "I adored her raunchy humor."
Struthers, a two-time Emmy winner for her role in "All in the Family," most recently starred alongside Ted Danson in "A Man on the Inside." She is also remembered for her portrayal of Babette in "Gilmore Girls" and has lent her voice to various series, including "Dinosaurs" and "TaleSpin," in addition to a recent theatrical production of "An Old-Fashioned Family Murder."
