Savanah Guthrie makes a major change to offered security amid mom Nancy’s kidnapping

Published: Apr 21 2026

Savannah Guthrie carries a heavy load on her plate, as she not only recently returned to the Today show after her mother's January 1st, 2026 kidnapping but also appeared to have declined any armed security while on NBC studio premises. A well-placed insider shared the reasoning behind her decision with celebrity news reporter Rob Shuter. The man behind the popular Substack newsletter, Naughty but Nice, learned that NBC itself had offered round-the-clock personal protection for the host, including dedicated guards within 30 Rock and Studio 1A. However, she had firmly said 'no' to the offer.

The insider explained the reason for her decision: "She doesn't want a bodyguard sitting outside her office or walking her through the halls. She desires to feel normal at work."

"There is extra security at the show and throughout NBC right now," they continued. "The building is locked down tighter than usual."

The source also revealed that access to the host has been restricted. "Access is stricter than ever. No pass, no entry - no exceptions." They added, "Even longtime staff are being turned away if they don't follow protocol. Rules are rules right now."

While her 'no' meant there would be no private, dedicated security just for Savannah in her office, the source explained that "her off-site security is being handled. But those details are private."

As for the host herself, it was said that "she wants to walk in, do her job, and not feel surrounded by fear. She's protected. But she's not giving up her normal life."
