Scarlett Johansson upholds a steadfast principle of declining photos with her fans, a stance that seems unwavering in the near future. During an exclusive interview with InStyle, Scarlett opened up candidly about the intricacies of fame and personal boundaries, offering rare glimpses into her life as a mother of two.
"I admit, I do tend to overshare," Scarlett began, reflecting on her media interactions. "I'm not entirely closed off; you could say I'm an open book in some respects. I'm politically active and vocalize my stance. However, when it comes to my personal life, I cherish my intimate friendships deeply. My family holds an immeasurable value to me, and so does their privacy."
For the uninitiated, Scarlett has been wedded to Saturday Night Live's Colin Jost since 2020. Together, they share a three-year-old son named Cosmo. Additionally, Scarlett is the doting mother to a ten-year-old daughter named Rose, from her previous marriage to Romain Dauriac. Well-known for her vigilance in safeguarding her children's privacy, Scarlett seldom mentions them in interviews.
"The anonymity of my children is something I hold very dear," Scarlett elaborated, sharing a behind-the-scenes anecdote about her skincare brand, The Outset, which she launched in 2022. "Recently, I was in conversation with my daughter, who expressed her desire to create videos for The Outset. She inquisitively asked, 'Why can't I?' To which I replied, 'Well, besides the fact that you're only ten…'"
It bears mentioning that Scarlett has been under the media's scrutinizing gaze since her childhood, having made her cinematic debut at the tender age of nine in the 1994 release, North. When discussing her relationship with fame in an interview with InStyle, she shared, "Being a public figure brings the thrill of recognition and celebration, akin to a fun-filled adventure. However, once that genie's out of the bottle, there's no putting it back. The stark reality is, it entails a significant loss. So, I strive to shield my children from its allure until they're old enough to make that choice themselves. That's the path I've chosen for them."
Despite hints that her offspring won't be venturing into the public eye anytime soon, Scarlett seems equally intent on establishing clear boundaries with the public herself. She remarked, "I crave the anonymity to stroll into Duane Reade and shop for myself."
Elaborating on her stringent policy of not posing for photos with fans unless at an official event, Scarlett clarified, "This stance often ruffles feathers. But it doesn't imply a lack of appreciation for their fandom or joy in seeing them. I always emphasize, 'I'm off-duty now.'"
"I don't seek to be defined by my whereabouts at any given moment," she further defended her stance. "I cherish my solitude, immersed in thoughts unrelated to others' perceptions. Self-consciousness isn't my cup of tea."
Scarlett then drew parallels between her own fame journey and a certain pop star, resonating deeply with Chappell Roan's perspective on fame, as articulated by the "Good Luck, Babe!" singer last year. "Over the summer, I, like many others, fell under her spell. She's unabashed about the struggles of adjusting to fame," she said. Upon reading an article about the singer, Scarlett realized a profound connection, acknowledging how much they had in common.
