The return of Hiroyuki Sanada (Toranaga) and Cosmo Jarvis (Blackthorne) adds a layer of familiarity to the ensemble, alongside Fumi Nikaidô (Ochiba), Shinnosuke Abe (Buntaro), Hiroto Kanai (Omi), Yoriko Dôguchi (Kiri), Tommy Bastow (Alvito), Yuko Miyamoto (Gin), Eita Okuno (Saeki), and Yuka Kouri (Kiku).

According to FX, the second season "unfolds ten years after the events of the first season, continuing the historical narrative of two men from disparate worlds whose fates are irrevocably intertwined." Shogun, adapted from James Clavell's novel, promises to rekindle the flames of its critically acclaimed predecessor.

In the spring, co-creators and showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks orchestrated a writers' room for the upcoming season, with contributions from Shannon Goss, Matt Lambert, Maegan Houang, Emily Yoshida, Caillin Puente, and Sofie Somoroff. The creative team also welcomes the return of Hiromi Kamata and Takeshi Fukunaga from season one, along with Marks, Anthony Byrne (FX's Say Nothing), and Kate Herron (Loki).

When Shogun season one premiered in 2024, it became a critical darling and the most-watched show in FX's history. It continued to dominate during its award season run, earning 18 Emmy nominations, including Best Drama Series. Sanada made history as the first Japanese actor to win Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Anna Sawai etched her name in the annals as the first actress of Asian descent to win Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
