The journey to Hollywood for Simu Liu wasn't an easy one, but he had a formidable support system to lean on during his struggling days. As the Marvel star accepted the prestigious Gold Mogul award at the Gold House Gold Gala, he paid a special tribute to them. In his acceptance speech, Liu shared, "The only reason I'm here is 10% being too stubborn to give up, and 90%—the most amazing support system. I've been reflecting a lot on what community means to me."
Over his decade-long career, the 37-year-old has become a prominent voice for the Asian Pacific community in the industry. Looking back on his challenging days, he recalled, "I first arrived in Canada 32 years ago, living in a makeshift apartment building in Ontario with many other Chinese grad students. From a very young age, I learned that a community stands together and supports one another. It doesn't collapse on itself or tear itself down."
Looking around the room, Liu was struck by the immense power that exists in our storytellers, champions, leaders, and taste-makers. He concluded, "But only together can we fully unleash the potential of that power."
