Snoop Dogg Praises Same-Sex Parenting After Comments on LGBTQ+ Representation in Movies

Snoop Dogg is taking a bold step in educating himself and his audience about same-sex relationships, following the backlash he faced after his previous comments on Disney and Pixar's Lightyear, which featured two women kissing. The 53-year-old "Drop It Like It's Hot" rapper has teamed up with GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) for its annual Spirit Day to announce his latest single, an inclusive children's song titled "Love Is Love."

In a conversation shared on his YouTube channel on October 16th, Snoop spoke to The Voice alum Jeremy Beloate, an openly queer artist who recently released a song on Snoop's Death Row Records label, about the importance of the single. Beloate competed on the NBC series during Snoop's time as a judge. "It's a beautiful thing that kids can have parents of all walks of life, and be able to be shown love, and be taught what love is," said the Doggyland creator of his new campaign.

Snoop went on to say that "hate is taught and so is love," celebrating diversity and emphasizing that "whether it's two fathers, two mothers, whatever it is, love is the key." He added, "I think these kids are being loved by these great parents who are showing them an example of what family is," and he wanted to give a shoutout to all the parents out there for doing such a great job with these kids.

The Grammy nominee explained that he has "the opportunity to teach these kids through my music," which is why he agreed to the partnership with GLAAD. Snoop Dogg's recent predicament came after an episode of the It's Giving podcast in August, where he criticized Lightyear for showing two women kissing (and later welcoming a baby son), a scene that left his grandchild with questions he couldn't answer about the Toy Story spin-off.

While discussing the children's animated film on the podcast, the "Sensual Seduction" artist, who is a grandfather to seven grandchildren, recalled one of his grandsons asking him "in the middle of the movie" at the theater, "‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She a woman!’" Snoop said he thought to himself, "I didn't come here for this s---. I just came to watch the goddamn movie." Instead of explaining the scene, the "Gin and Juice" hitmaker replied, "Hey man, watch the movie." However, the questions from his grandkid persisted, with the little boy asking how two women were able to have a baby.

Snoop expressed his confusion and fear of going to the movies now, saying, "Y'all throwing me in the middle of s--- that I don't have an answer for." He added that both the scene and his grandson's questions "threw me for a loop." He concluded by saying, "What part of the movie was this? These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They're going to ask questions...I don't have the answer."
