Snoop Dogg's latest remarks have raised quite a stir. After accompanying one of his seven grandchildren to witness the animated adventure of Disney's "Lightyear," the rapper behind the hit "Gin and Juice" found himself astonished by the portrayal of an LGBTQ+ couple on the silver screen.
"It's as if I'm now dreading a trip to the movies," Snoop revealed on the August 20th episode of Sarah Fontenot's "It's Giving" podcast. "You're placing me amidst a scenario that I'm utterly unprepared to address."
In a scene from the 2022 "Toy Story" spin-off, the female character Alisha Hawthorne, voiced by Uzo Aduba, casually mentions having a wife. Later, the couple is depicted sharing a kiss and welcoming a son into their lives.
"I was completely taken aback," Snoop continued. "I thought to myself, 'Which part of the film is this?' These are children we're talking about. Do we really need to expose them to this at such a tender age? They'll undoubtedly have questions, and I don't have the answers."
Indeed, the 55-year-old artist shared that the moment sparked numerous inquiries from his young grandson. "In the midst of the movie, my grandson asked, 'Papa Snoop, how does she have a baby with another woman?' He couldn't comprehend it," Snoop recounted. "She's a woman, after all."
In response, Snoop simply urged, "Hey man, just watch the movie." However, internally, he was thinking, "Oh shoot. I didn't sign up for this. I just wanted to enjoy the bloody film."
The inclusion of a same-sex couple in "Lightyear" sparked significant controversy upon its release, prompting countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to ban the film outright. At one point, the controversial scene was even excised from the film, according to Variety, before being reinstated following an apology from former CEO Bob Chapek for Disney's silence regarding Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' bill.
"Speaking with you, reading your messages, and meeting with you has helped me grasp the depth of pain caused by our silence," Chapek penned in a March 2022 email to employees. "It's evident that this isn't merely about a bill in Florida, but rather another assault on fundamental human rights."
"You needed me to be a more steadfast ally in the battle for equality, and I failed you," he continued. "I am truly sorry."
