As the "Super Bass" spitfire continues her online barrage, targeting not only the "Kill Bill" vocalist but also heavyweights like Jay-Z and Megan Thee Stallion, SZA remains steadfast in her conviction, unwavering in the face of Nicki's accusations. When Nicki labeled her a "fake girl's girl," the 35-year-old artist struck back with a cool demeanor.
On July 16th, via X, SZA responded to Nicki with a casual dismissal, saying, "Lol, you're having a moment. I'm not sure why, but be blessed." Nicki had initially sparked the controversy by sharing a video from the 2018 Met Gala, where Rihanna failed to notice SZA trying to catch her attention on the red carpet. "These are the fake girl's girls who talk trash but will jump at the chance for a photo or pull stunts like this on camera to pretend they're not the haters they truly are," Nicki alleged in response to the clip. "It's so liberating to truly be yourself."
While SZA and Rihanna do not interact in the video, the two musicians have shared positive moments in public, which SZA has proudly documented on social media. Furthermore, SZA featured on Rihanna's 2016 album, ANTI. However, when it comes to her relationship with Nicki, SZA alleges that she turned down the "Starships" singer's requests for a collaboration. "You are well aware of my music and contributions, considering you've asked for features twice without a response," SZA added in her July 16th post on X, attaching an alleged screenshot of texts from Nicki. "Besides, you even rap my lyrics when you're feeling yourself," she noted, referencing her credit as a writer on Beyoncé and Nicki's 2014 hit "Feeling Myself."
The digital dust-up between Nicki and SZA kicked off on July 15th after Nicki called out rapper Punch, who is signed to SZA's Top Dawg Entertainment label, for allegedly bullying her on social media. (Punch has remained silent on the allegations.) Shortly thereafter, SZA tweeted nonchalantly, "Mercury retrograde...don't take the bait, lol, silly goose." Although Mercury retrograde doesn't officially commence until the evening of July 17th, Nicki and SZA's spat seems to have preemptively ignited the astrological event, promising to disrupt egos and throw off rhythms.
