The stars of "Teen Mom," Catelynn Lowell and her husband Tyler Baltierra, have shed light on the heart-wrenching reason behind their daughter's adoptive parents' decision to "block" them from her life. In 2009, the now-33-year-olds reluctantly placed their firstborn daughter, Carly, now 15, for adoption. During a January episode of "Teen Mom: The Next Chapter," Catelynn disclosed that Carly's adoptive parents, Brandon and Teresa Davis, had recently severed all ties between the two families, despite initially agreeing to an open adoption.
Fast forward to the most recent episode of the MTV series, aired on March 27th, where Catelynn and Tyler provided deeper insights into Brandon and Teresa's harrowing decision. "Brandon and Teresa candidly told our adoption counselor, Dawn, 'I had to block her [Catelynn] for my mental health,'" Catelynn recounted during the episode. "I was stunned. 'Your mental health?' I was overwhelmed with a flurry of emotions, reliving the moment I bid farewell to Carly in the hospital."
Catelynn further claimed that Teresa instructed Dawn to convey that sending gifts was no longer permissible, insisting on anonymity. "She said, 'But tell them they can't tell anyone I said that.' I responded, 'Well, I'm spilling the beans now. I'm shouting it from the rooftops,'" Catelynn exclaimed. Tyler added, "You have my child, but you can't silence my story too."
Catelynn also alleged that Teresa demanded a "heartfelt apology" from her, to which Catelynn retorted, "You need an apology? For what? For exposing the truth about your actions towards us? I'm the one who deserves an apology."
Catelynn, who now shares Nova, 10, Vaeda, 6, and Rya, 3, with Tyler, speculated that Teresa's issues partly stemmed from Carly referring to her siblings as her sisters. "Carly has always said, 'This is my sister.' I thought it was okay," Catelynn clarified later in the episode while conversing with podcaster and TikTok sensation Jordy Cray. "Teresa objected, stating, 'The word 'sisters' really bugs me.'" Tyler echoed, "It doesn't sit right with me. Should we say 'birth sister'? She didn't have a satisfactory answer."
Catelynn emphasized that their primary objective in discussing the situation publicly was to assure Carly that they had "never ceased trying" to maintain a relationship with her. "She deserves to know this, in my view," she stressed. "Moreover, it brings awareness to everyone involved in adoption."
In a prior episode, Catelynn revealed that the abrupt termination of communication with Carly had triggered "adoption PTSD," despite her extensive mental health journey. "It was challenging. I once believed I had healed from my adoption trauma. I underwent therapy and worked hard on it. But when all this unfolded, I found myself in a dark place, grappling with adoption PTSD for weeks to a month. I'd burst into tears unexpectedly, consumed by anxiety and sorrow," she recounted.
"It's crucial for me to be open with my kids," Catelynn continued. "When my kids saw me crying, they'd ask, 'Why are you sad?' It was difficult to explain. I'd tell them, 'I miss your sister very much.'" She added, "Thankfully, my kids offer me solace too. I have responsibilities as a mother, and I can't remain a shattered mess forever. I have these beautiful children who need me."
