News, the star of "13 Reasons Why" initiated divorce proceedings from her spouse, Elise Williams, on May 16th in New York City, nearly two years after tying the knot. Efforts by E! News to seek comments from representatives for both Tommy and Elise remained unanswered.
In 2021, the 33-year-old Tommy crossed paths with Elise on the dating app Hinge, the very year she publicly identified as a transgender woman and parted ways with her husband of five years, Peter Zurkuhlen. Tommy's engagement to Elise was revealed in August 2022 during an appearance on Rachel Bilson's "Broad Ideas" podcast, where she kept her fiancée's identity concealed, merely hinting at her new love interest being "a gay girl."
Two years hence, in an essay for Vogue in 2024, Tommy delved deeper into their romantic tale, sharing that the couple had exchanged vows just a couple of months into their courtship. "The initial months of our relationship paved the way for our eventual marriage," Tommy penned in the essay. "We got engaged within two months of dating."
She further disclosed their secret elopement towards the end of 2023 in a since-deleted Instagram post, stating, "I married my best friend, keeping it a secret from everyone except @hunterabrams, who captured our special moments towards the end of last year."
For Tommy, this relationship bestowed upon her a profound sense of being cherished. She confided in Vogue that she had "fallen in love with someone who doesn't fetishize" her. Tommy also expressed her pride in celebrating their love story, saying, "We acknowledge the merit in sharing our love with the world and, honestly, the significance of showcasing trans and queer love as trendy."
Despite their whirlwind romance, a December 2024 Instagram post from Tommy subtly hinted at their separation, just seven months after the Vogue article was published. Captioning a series of photos where Elise was conspicuously absent, Tommy penned, "In a place like this, heartbreak finds a strange sense of solace."
