Bonnie Tyler is on the road to recovery. On Wednesday, May 6th, a statement was shared on the official website of the "Total Eclipse of the Heart" singer, revealing that she had undergone emergency intestinal surgery in her home in Faro, Portugal. "We are deeply sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital for this emergency surgery," it read. "Fortunately, the surgery went well, and she is now on the path to recovery."
The statement concluded, "We understand that her family, friends, and fans will be worried about this news and will be sending her well wishes for a speedy and full recovery." A representative for Tyler, who is 74 years old, has not yet responded to PEOPLE's request for comment.

The Welsh singer initially rose to fame in the 1970s with hits like "Lost in France" and "It's a Heartache," and found success with her 1983 album Faster Than the Speed of Night. Throughout her career, Tyler became the first British female artist to debut at No. 1 on the U.K. Albums Chart and remains the only Welsh artist to land a No. 1 on the U.K. Singles Chart. She has also earned acclaim for beloved songs like "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Holding Out for a Hero," which have transcended generations.
In April 2024, she reflected on the enduring success of her 1983 classic "Total Eclipse of the Heart," which gains popularity around celestial events. Tyler told Good Morning America that she still gets "excited" when that song comes on the radio, but she feels especially connected to it during an actual eclipse. "Every time there's an eclipse, everyone all over the world plays 'Total Eclipse of the Heart,' and I never get tired of singing it," she said.
Written and produced by the late songwriting icon Jim Steinman, Tyler's power ballad does earn more listens during a solar or lunar eclipse. According to Spotify at the time, searches for the Grammy-nominated song on the streaming service increased by nearly 50% in the U.S. ahead of that month's eclipse. In an April 2024 interview with the New York Post, she also spoke about the listening habits surrounding "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Tyler noted that Spotify sends her "all these stats all the time, and it's always amazing."
