Lola Young has brushed off online labels branding her a "nepo baby," a derogatory term implying privileged advancement in the entertainment industry due to family connections. This British vocalist's career skyrocketed earlier this year when her 2024 single, "Messy," topped the UK singles chart amidst a viral resurgence on TikTok. However, this new wave of success opened the floodgates to intense scrutiny of Lola's personal life, with detractors highlighting that a relative of hers penned the beloved children's book, "The Gruffalo."
When questioned by Capital Buzz about critics who label her an "industry plant," a term used to disparage artists perceived as artificially promoted, Lola fired back with conviction: "That's the most absurd label I've ever heard. Sure, there may be instances of industry plants, but so what? It doesn't negate their talent or diminish their achievements." She further asserted, "People are calling me a 'nepo baby' solely because my great aunt wrote 'The Gruffalo.' What nonsense is that? There's so much more to my story that I can't even divulge here. But let me be clear: I'm neither a nepo baby nor an industry plant. To all those losers hurling nonsense on the internet, find something better to do with your sad, lonely lives."
She elaborated, "'Industry plant' is just a buzzword for individuals who are lost in their own lives, feeling resentful when someone else's moment shines. And honestly, if you are an industry plant, your moment won't last long. Sometimes it might, but it doesn't matter. Talent speaks louder than any label. If someone's talented, they're talented, end of story."
Lola also spoke fondly of her time at the Brit School in Croydon, emphasizing its accessibility as a free institution. "It's an ordinary school, and before that, I attended a really tough school. You have to audition to get in," she insisted.
Earlier this month, Lola delivered a stellar debut performance at the Brit Awards, where she was also nominated in two categories. Following her defeat in the Best Pop Act category to Jade Thirlwall of Little Mix, Lola posted a TikTok video the following day, lambasting those who claimed she wasn't genuinely happy for Jade. She lambasted the "fucking idiots," "keyboard warriors," and, in her humorous description, "Stacey from Essex," who she said "just love to hate."
