Kate Hudson harbors lingering regrets about declining the role in "The Devil Wears Prada." The actress, who was initially tapped to portray Andy Sachs (a character eventually brought to life by Anne Hathaway), recently confided in Capital FM, expressing her wish that she had somehow rearranged her schedule to star alongside Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci in the 2006 cinematic gem.
"That was a colossal misjudgment on my part," Hudson admitted. "It all boiled down to timing. I was in a situation where I couldn't commit, though deep down, I knew I should have made it work. When I watched the film, I was filled with regret. But then again, everything unfolds for a specific reason. There was a purpose behind it all. I kept thinking, 'I really should have made that happen.'"
Directed by David Frankel, "The Devil Wears Prada" is an adaptation of Lauren Weisberger's bestselling novel. The narrative revolves around Andy, an aspiring journalist who ventures to New York City to serve as an assistant to Miranda Priestly (Streep), the icy editor-in-chief of a prestigious fashion magazine.
"It's amusing how life's ebb and flow dictate our paths, with projects and opportunities lining up at different junctures," Hudson mused. "It's not that I didn't want to do them; it's just that sometimes, you're already tied up with something else. It was truly disappointing," she confessed.
During the period when "The Devil Wears Prada" was being filmed and eventually released, Hudson was immersed in a myriad of other ventures, including "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" (2003), "The Skeleton Key" (2005), "You, Me and Dupree" (2006), "Fool's Gold" (2008), and "My Best Friend's Girl" (2008). Interestingly, she later crossed paths with Hathaway once again in "Bride Wars" (2009).
"The Devil Wears Prada" raked in over $326 million globally and garnered two Oscar nominations. Currently, Disney is in the nascent stages of developing a sequel, with the original screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, penning the script.
