Will Forte has opened up about his "profoundest regret," which surprisingly, revolves around not participating in a reality TV show alongside the late Val Kilmer. In a personal essay penned for Vulture, the former Saturday Night Live star reminisced about his bond with Kilmer, who tragically passed away from pneumonia at the age of 65, as announced by his daughter. Their friendship blossomed while filming the 2010 movie MacGruber, inspired by Forte's recurring SNL sketch of the same title.
The actors maintained a close connection even after their film collaboration. Forte recalled a time when Kilmer, best known for his role in The Doors, sought refuge at his place amid a landlord dispute in Malibu. During their two-and-a-half-month cohabitation, Forte introduced Kilmer to the world of reality TV.
"I was a fan of The Amazing Race, and one evening, as I was engrossed in it, Kilmer returned home and snooped, 'What kind of trash are you watching? Come on, that stuff will only rot your brain!' I responded, 'Actually, it's pretty good. Why don't you sit down, give it a fair chance before you dismiss it,'" reminisced Forte, known for his role in The Last Man on Earth. "Reluctantly, he settled in and soon found himself hooked."
It was then that Kilmer struck upon a daring idea. "At one point, he excitedly declared, 'Will, we've got to do The Amazing Race together. Let's make it happen!' I was all in, and we both got incredibly thrilled at the prospect," Forte shared.
However, when they revealed their daring plan to participate in The Amazing Race to their respective agents and managers, the response was far from encouraging. "They flat-out refused, saying something along the lines of, 'No way you're doing this,' Forte recounted. "To this very day, that stands as the biggest regret of my entire career – never joining Val on The Amazing Race. We might have been eliminated early, but it would have been an adventure of a lifetime."
The Amazing Race is a long-standing reality competition series where multiple teams compete in a globe-trotting race, with the winning team taking home a cool $1 million prize.
