With "1923" now etched in the annals of history, the saga of the Dutton family is seamlessly transitioning to a new chapter titled "1944." As earlier heralded, "1944" will be the forthcoming prequel to "Yellowstone" on Paramount+, following in the footsteps of "1883" and "1923." While the precise contours of the narrative remain shrouded in secrecy, it is undeniable that the series will delve deeply into the profound impact of World War II on the Yellowstone Ranch and the Dutton clan.

The climactic episode of "1923" unveiled a poignant twist: Spencer Dutton (portrayed with heartfelt intensity by Brandon Sklenar) bids farewell to his beloved wife Alex (Julia Schlaepfer), yet soldiers on for another four and a half decades to raise their son. This son, John Dutton II, is none other than the patriarch of "Yellowstone"'s protagonist, John Dutton III. By 1944, John II would be a spry 21-year-old, poised to become the natural focal point of this upcoming series. Moreover, Spencer himself would still be alive in 1944, sparking curiosity about whether Sklenar will reprise his role. The actor, ever eager for a challenge, hints at his interest.

"I'm well aware that '1944' is in the pipeline, and perhaps we'll catch a glimpse of Spencer in that era," Sklenar revealed in an interview with Variety, timed to coincide with the series finale. "It's something I'd be delighted to tackle."

The decision to extend the "Yellowstone" prequel franchise comes as no shock, given the resounding success of both "1923" and "1883" on Paramount. Beyond robust viewer figures, "1883" garnered three Emmy nominations, while Season 1 of "1923" secured two Golden Globe nods, including one for Best Drama Series. These prequels have also fortified Taylor Sheridan's creative partnership with Paramount, where he is under a lucrative overall deal.

Although "Yellowstone" concluded its five-season run in December 2024, the momentum continues with the upcoming series "The Madison," starring Michelle Pfeiffer, and a Beth-Rip spinoff in development. Recent whispers also hint at nascent discussions for a Kayce Dutton spinoff at CBS. Sheridan's creative portfolio at Paramount+ further expands with shows like "Landman," "Tulsa King," "Mayor of Kingstown," and "Lioness."
