A fresh face has taken the reins of the animated series 'X-Men '97'. Matthew Chauncey, renowned for his contributions to Disney+ shows such as 'Ms. Marvel' and 'What If…?', has been appointed as the lead writer for the upcoming third season of the streamer's hit 'X-Men' reboot, as reported by our sister outlet Deadline. (TVLine has sought confirmation from Disney+.)

'X-Men '97' Finds Season 3 Head Writer — Beau DeMayo Replacement 1

Chauncey steps into the shoes of series creator Beau DeMayo, who spearheaded the scripting for Seasons 1 and 2 but unexpectedly severed ties with the franchise mere days before its triumphant March premiere this year. As The Hollywood Reporter detailed, DeMayo's work email was deactivated, staff was notified of his disengagement, and his Instagram account vanished.

"I cannot divulge specifics, but I can attest that Beau held profound respect and affection for these characters," shared Marvel Studios' executive Brad Winderbaum with Entertainment Weekly shortly after DeMayo's departure. "He penned scripts that I believe are nothing short of exceptional, inspiring the rest of the team to craft the magnificent show we now behold on screen. His exit was not a dismissal; we simply parted ways."

'X-Men '97' relives the captivating era of the 1990s, where the X-Men, a group of mutants harnessing their extraordinary abilities to safeguard a world that shuns and dreads them, are thrust into unprecedented challenges, facing an ominous and unexpected new future. Season 2 is currently in full swing, while Season 3, where Chauncey will collaborate with Season 1 director Jake Castorena, is still in the formative stages, eagerly awaited by fans and critics alike.
