'Yellowstone' spinoff 'Marshals’ director speaks out about 'really important' Monica's death

The director of Yellowstone's spinoff Marshals, Greg Yaitanes, has finally spoken out about the "no exposition" approach to Kelsey Asbille's character, Monica Long Dutton's death. For those who may be unaware, Monica, the wife of Luke Grimes' character Kayce Dutton, tragically passed away from cancer caused by toxic pollution from a nearby government-operated mine.

In an insightful interview with Collider, Yaitanes, the director of Marshals' premiere, opened up about the decision to withhold any detailed explanation regarding Monica's off-screen demise. He stated, "This is why it didn't feel like a pilot to me. There was no exposition about Monica's death in the pilot."

It's worth noting that the exclusion of Monica's death details was intentional and part of the overall plan. Yaitanes explained, "It was exactly how it would be a year or two after the character's death. You'd be discussing the circumstances surrounding it, rather than the actual event itself."

The director further emphasized the significance of including Monica's photo in the protest scene. "What was really important was that we had her picture for the protest, and she was lovely to give us permission for that. That was a really critical piece to that scene. That's what I thought that scene was about," he said, expressing his gratitude towards Asbille for allowing the use of her image.

It's worth mentioning that Yellowstone, a neo-Western drama television series created by Taylor Sheridan for Paramount Network, aired from 2018 to 2024 over five seasons. Marshals, a neo-Western and police procedural television series consisting of 13 episodes, premiered on Sunday, March 1, 2026, with a new episode dropping every Sunday.
